Overview of Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can appear suddenly and may require immediate care. At Ghauri Dental Centre, we treat a wide range of urgent conditions.

Examples We Commonly See

  • Severe Toothache or Pulpitis: Often caused by decay or trauma; may require pulp removal or root canal referral.
  • Dental Abscess: Infections can cause swelling, pain, and fever. Immediate treatment is essential.
  • Swelling (Gums or Face): Can indicate infection. Left untreated, swelling may spread or affect breathing.
  • Dislodged Crowns or Fillings: May expose sensitive parts of the tooth. We can provide a temporary solution.
  • Fractured Teeth: Often due to injury or biting on hard objects. Prompt care reduces nerve exposure and pain.
  • Post-Extraction Bleeding: Continuous bleeding may require emergency intervention to stop.

Non-Emergencies

concerns such as broken dentures or veneers are not considered emergencies. We will advise you on the appropriate appointment type for these.

Dental Emergency

Understanding Toothache: Reversible vs Irreversible Pulpitis

Reversible Pulpitis

  • Triggered by hot, cold, or sweet stimuli
  • Pain stops once the trigger is removed
  • Localised pain without swelling
  • Treatment: A filling or crown is often sufficient.

Irreversible Pulpitis

  • Constant, throbbing pain
  • Pain not triggered by any obvious cause
  • Often disrupts sleep
  • Possible swelling, fever, or radiating pain
  • Treatment: Urgent root canal therapy or extraction may be necessary.

Dental Prosthetic Emergencies

Lost Fillings or Crowns

These can expose sensitive tooth structure.

Treatment:

  • Temporary filling or re-cementing crowns may be offered.
  • Full restorations are done at follow-up appointments.

Broken Teeth

May involve pulp exposure. We assess and stabilise the tooth, offering options like crowns or fillings in the future.

Dental Trauma Care in London

Knocked-Out Teeth (Avulsion)

Act fast—replantation within 30 to 120 minutes improves survival. Store the tooth in milk or saliva. Avoid water or scrubbing.

Displaced or Loose Teeth

Prompt repositioning and splinting can preserve the tooth.

Chipped or Cracked Teeth

We can stabilise so that in the future, the tooth may be restored with composite bonding, crowns, or veneers.

Facial Swelling (Intra/Extraoral)

Facial swelling can indicate a spreading infection (cellulitis). Seek immediate attention to avoid complications.
