“Dental Myths Debunked”

As we continue our journey of learning about optimal oral health, this week we discuss common misconceptions that may influence people’s perceptions of dental care. Here, we debunk some prevalent dental myths to provide you with accurate information and promote oral health.

Myth: Sugar is the Sole Culprit for Cavities

Reality: While excessive sugar consumption contributes to tooth decay, it’s not the only factor. Poor oral hygiene, infrequent dental check-ups, and other dietary choices also play a role. Here at Ghauri Dental Centres, we take a  comprehensive approach to cavity prevention by promoting regular check-ups for implementing prevention,  early intervention when necessary and great oral hygiene.

Myth: Brushing Harder Equals Cleaner Teeth

Reality: Brushing vigorously can damage tooth enamel and gums. Here, we emphasize the importance of using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle brushing technique, something we are happy to demonstrate during routine check-ups and hygiene appointments, in order to maintain oral health without causing harm.

Myth: Flossing Isn’t Necessary if You Brush Thoroughly

Reality: Brushing alone doesn’t reach the spaces between teeth where plaque accumulates. Here, we stress the significance of daily flossing and/or interdental cleaning to remove debris and plaque, preventing gum disease and cavities. Once again, we are happy to demonstrate flossing and interdental cleaning with interdental brushes and TePe brushes during routine check-ups and hygiene appointments

Myth: Baby Teeth Aren’t Important

Reality: Some may believe that since baby teeth eventually fall out, they aren’t crucial. However, they serve essential functions, such as aiding in proper speech development and guiding the eruption of permanent teeth. Here, we encourage parents to prioritize their child’s oral care from an early age. We support regular children’s check-ups from 6 months unless there is an earlier dental concern. Here, we can start an early relationship with children and encourage great oral hygiene and a well-balanced diet in promoting optimal oral health for years to come.

Myth: Dentists Only Treat Teeth

Reality: Dental professionals play a crucial role in overall health. Regular dental check-ups can reveal signs of systemic conditions, and maintaining good oral health contributes to overall well-being. We also examine for diseases that can manifest in the mouth, such as some forms of cancer so we screen orally for cancer regularly amongst other diseases.

We are here to help you navigate through the choices specific to your mouth and needs during scheduled appointments,

Our dentists will discuss your options and needs and recommend treatments and/or beneficial changes for you. Your dentist will also discuss a treatment plan and arrange for any necessary appointments
